One of the loves of my life, writing

I knew I was better at language arts than science and math when I was in the fifth grade. I had just begun to learn more complicated equations, and my brain just did not want to cooperate. But in History or English class, I enjoyed learning and absorbed all that I could. I never fully understood that I was a good writer until much later in life. To be honest, I wasn't even supposed to be an English major. I came into college wanting to double major in Psychology and Advertising but as it turns out life had other plans for me. The professor of my gen ed English class about literature after the Civil War (a class of over 100 people) sent me a long email at the end of the semester telling me I was one of the best writers in the class. It shocked me. He knew my name..? How I never talked? I told my mom, "He must be email everyone this. They have to be low on English majors or something." My mom had to convince me that it was a sincere compliment.

After that email, added my second major a week later. Since my time with the English department, I have thoroughly enjoyed growing not only my writing skills but also my analysis and critical thinking skills. The class that solidified my love for writing was ENG 391, Nonfiction Writing, a summer class all online with the only assignments being writing exercises with open-ended prompts. I mostly wrote about my life and it made me realize how therapeutic writing can be.

Writing can release your deepest, darkest secrets or it can bring to life a whole new world. It allows for your mind to picture what you want the characters to look like. Writing can educate you, persuade you, make you cry, make you laugh. In my opinion, it is the greatest form of media.
